Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has ordered an increase in ammunition production, apparently to prepare for a protracted offensive in Ukraine. On Tuesday, Shoigu said his ministry held a meeting on boosting the production of ammunition. He stressed that it is especially important to replenish armaments. Russia is also said to be receiving ammunition from North Korea. The Washington Post reported on Monday that satellite images analyzed by a London-based research institute suggest that Russia has received a massive amount of arms from North Korea. It says two Russian ships made at least five round trips between a port in the northeastern part of North Korea and a port facility in Russia's Far East from mid-August through Saturday. The paper says this operation may be "more regular, extensive and ongoing" than the White House had revealed. A White House official said on Friday that North Korea has transported more than 1,000 containers of equipment and munitions to Russia in recent weeks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied this on Tuesday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, however, will begin a two-day visit to North Korea on Wednesday, apparently to discuss the details of bilateral cooperation. The Russian military is increasing its offensive in Avdiivka in the eastern region of Donetsk. A US think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, said on Monday that Russia likely deployed elements of at least two brigades to reinforce offensive operations on the Avdiivka front.
