Crews are still trying to reach hundreds of people trapped after Wednesday's earthquake in Taiwan. Ten people have been confirmed dead, 10 are unaccounted for and more than 1,100 injured. Damaged roads and railways are proving a challenge for rescue and relief teams. Helicopters are being used to reach those trapped in mountainous parts of Hualien County, which was hit-hard by the quake. They were brought to an evacuation site and provided with food and accommodations. Nearby, Reuters news agency reports firefighters rescued nine people who had been trapped inside a cave system carved into the mountains. In Hualien City, the community closest to the epicenter, experts say about 30 structures are in need of reinforcement or immediate demolition. On Friday, work began to tear down a nine-story building that was tilted precariously by the quake's force. A rescue worker said: "The demolition work will be completed within two weeks. I hope residents will be able to return to their normal lives." People were temporarily trapped inside and one woman died. The building was erected before tighter criteria for quake-resistance was enforced after a major tremor in 1999. Wednesday's quake damaged more than 800 buildings, including some in Taipei and New Taipei.
