UN General Assembly convenes emergency session on Israel-Hamas conflict NHK

The UN General Assembly has convened an emergency special session to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas.

The meeting began at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday. This is the first time in five years that the world body has held an emergency session on the Palestinian situation.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour, who spoke first, noted that almost all of the people killed in the Gaza Strip were civilians. Mansour said no one can defend the killings. He said, "These are crimes."

He also said, "The answer to the killing of Palestinian civilians is not the killing of Israeli civilians."

The Palestinian ambassador called for an immediate ceasefire. He said, "Every life is sacred. Please save lives."

Gilad Erdan, Israel's UN ambassador, said his country is at war with Hamas, not with the Palestinians.

He stressed that Israel's goal is to "completely eradicate Hamas' capabilities." Erdan added that Israel will use all means available to achieve its goal.

During the two-day session, representatives from more than 100 nations will deliver speeches before they vote on a draft resolution submitted by Jordan.

The document calls for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, it does not condemn Hamas for carrying out the attacks against Israel on October 7.

The General Assembly's resolutions are not legally binding, but they do show that there is a consensus of opinion in the international community, as all 193 UN member states can vote for them.
