Tokyo-born giant panda Xiang Xiang has arrived in China after leaving Narita Airport in Japan. The 5-year-old female arrived in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, at around 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday. She is reportedly in good condition after the five-and-a-half-hour flight. A truck carrying Xiang Xiang left Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on Tuesday morning. A crowd of fans gathered at Narita near the capital to see her off. Zoo officials said she ate bamboo shoots and apples at the airport and appeared calm. She left on a chartered flight with her keepers shortly before 1 p.m. Xiang Xiang will be taken to a panda conservation and research center in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, where she is expected to contribute to the preservation and breeding of the species. Xiang Xiang was born in June 2017. She was Ueno Zoo's first naturally bred giant panda. Her parents were loaned by China to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for breeding research. Xiang Xiang belongs to China under an ownership agreement. According to the agreement she was to be sent to China when she turned 2. But the move was postponed five times due to the coronavirus pandemic.
