A: Hey there, have you caught up on the news lately? B: Nope, what's new? A: Well, there's this thing about illegal drugs in East and Southeast Asia that the United Nations is talking about. Seems pretty serious! B: Oh, really? What's going on? A: They just released a report saying they seized more than 236 tons of methamphetamines last year, an increase of 24%! Crazy, right? B: Whoa, that's a lot! Where did most of it come from? A: Mostly Southeast Asia. And get this, about 90% of it! The UN says there are these big production and trafficking networks run by crime groups. B: Wow, that sounds really bad. What about the country involved? A: It's mostly affecting Myanmar right now. They've been going through a lot of political problems for more than four years. The situation with methamphetamines is especially bad in their Shan State. B: Unbelievable, I can't even imagine what that must be like. Thanks for filling me in! ---------------- The United Nations is shedding light on the illegal synthetic drugs trade in East and Southeast Asia. An alarming new report shows the total amount of methamphetamines seized last year surged 24 percent. The UN's Office on Drugs and Crime released the figures on Wednesday. The report says authorities intercepted a record 236 tons of methamphetamine. About 90 percent came from Southeast Asia. The report points to "industrial-scale production and trafficking networks" operated by transnational crime groups. It describes the situation as "unprecedented" in Myanmar's Shan State. The country has been mired in political turmoil and conflict since the military took power more than four years ago.
