Syria's interim government has been stepping up diplomatic efforts in the weeks following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Asaad Hassan al-Shibani serves as foreign minister for the government, which is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. He has been visiting nearby countries, including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and met his Jordanian counterpart on Tuesday in Amman. During a joint news conference, al-Shibani touched on a recent announcement by Washington that it will ease some sanctions to provide humanitarian aid. "This breakthrough could pave the way for lifting these sanctions, but they must be lifted entirely to give the Syrian people their full opportunity to live in peace, security and prosperity," he said. The United Nations estimates 115,000 people have returned to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime last month. The interim government is trying to secure foreign aid to help rebuild the country. It's also reorganizing the military. Armed groups across Syria have agreed to disband. The government has urged soldiers of the former regime to hand over their weapons.
