US President Joe Biden has been stepping up gun control to tackle the problem of endless gun violence. In June last year, Biden signed a package of gun safety measures into law. It was the first gun control legislation in 28 years. The law imposed enhanced checks on criminal records, mental health, and other information on gun buyers under the age of 21. Biden also established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention last month. He said it is aimed at reducing gun violence and expanding executive and legislative action to save lives. The office is overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden said in a statement that the office, along with the rest of his administration, will continue to do everything it can to combat the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing families, communities and the country apart. The president also vowed to continue to urge Congress to take action to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Observers say the move could be aimed at appealing to voters ahead of next year's presidential election. The Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit organization, says the number of gun violence deaths in the US for 2023 stood at 15,544 as of Thursday, excluding suicide.
