A group of lawmakers from three Japanese opposition parties will visit Taiwan next month on a visit aimed at boosting cooperation against the backdrop of China's growing military pressure. The delegation consists of more than 10 lawmakers from the Constitutional Democratic Party, Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party and Democratic Party for the People. They will arrive in Taiwan on July 2 and spend three days there. Taiwan extended an invitation for the visit. The group plans to meet politicians, including President Tsai Ing-wen and senior members of two opposition parties -- the Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party. The delegation is hoping to use the talks to confirm the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and strengthen collaboration in security, the economy and other spheres. Maehara Seiji, a high-ranking official of the Democratic Party for the People, will lead the group. The former foreign minister told reporters that Taiwan is an important friend which shares values, such as democracy, respect for basic human rights and the rule of law. He said the group wants to tell Taiwan that it is valued not only by Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party but also by opposition parties aiming to achieve a change of government in Japan.
