1. A record-breaking number of bear attacks on humans in Japan have been reported, with over 220 cases as of November 13, surpassing the total for fiscal 2023. 2. In response, the US Embassy and consulates in Japan have issued a wildlife alert, advising Americans to avoid areas where bears have been sighted, walk in groups, and be aware of their surroundings. 3. Specially trained police officers are now allowed to use rifles to cull bears in residential and other areas where people frequent, as amendments have been made to the National Public Safety Commission rules concerning the use of firearms. This measure is intended for emergency situations where municipalities cannot promptly deploy hunters or secure them.
