Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty amid their countries' deepening confrontation with the West. The leaders signed the pact on Friday at the Kremlin in Moscow. It covers cooperation between the two nations in economic and security areas. At the beginning of the summit meeting held prior to the signing, Putin said the agreement will provide additional impetus to all areas of their cooperation. Pezeshkian said relations between the two countries are getting better every day, and that the pact will help them further boost ties. The treaty states that the two nations will develop their military cooperation, such as by conducting joint exercises. It says if one of them is attacked, the other shall not give any military assistance to the aggressor. It falls short of mentioning providing direct assistance to each other in such a case, as stated in treaties that Russia signed with North Korea and Belarus respectively last year. Western countries have expressed concerns about the deepening ties between Russia and Iran. Moscow is believed to have been buying drones and other weapons from Tehran since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.
