Leaders in Finland and Sweden saw Russian troops roll into Ukraine and decided to end decades of neutrality. They promised the countries would join NATO together. Now, the Finns are set to join the alliance on their own.

All 30 NATO nations have to approve any new members. However, leaders in Turkey raised objections. They argued both countries were soft on terrorism. They held months of talks, then cleared the way for Finland. On Thursday, Turkish lawmakers added their approval.

Before the war, most Finns were opposed to joining the alliance. Some still worry about being drawn into the affairs of other countries.

One man said, "Finns have done well serving as a border between East and West. But we have followed current trends, and it's hard to trust some things. Maybe NATO brings that security."

Turkish leaders are keeping Sweden on hold. They say the country has not done enough to crack down on Kurdish groups they consider to be terrorists.

Russian diplomats have warned joining the alliance would make both countries "legitimate targets." Finland shares a border with Russia. The diplomats say its membership will almost double the length of borders shared with NATO.
