North Korea Shipping Weapons to Russia? Satellite Images Show Increased Rail Activity at Shared Border After Recent Putin-Kim Meeting David Wetzel 38 minutes ago New satellite imagery is fueling speculation that North Korea has begun supplying weapons to neighboring Russia. Knewz.com has learned that 73 freight railcars were detected crossing from the North Korean border into Russia, according to Beyond Parallel, a website run by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. The Tumangang Rail Facility is at the center of North Korea-Russia relations. By: MEGA According to the think tank, the railcars full of supplies were seen on October 5. Beyond Parallel reports that the traffic seen going through the border is significantly more than it's observed during the past five years, including years when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height. The movement likely is what Western countries feared would happen when North Korea leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month. Since Russia first invaded Ukraine, it has appeared to form closer bonds with United States adversaries like North Korea and China. According to Beyond Parallel, it's highly likely the increase in railcar traffic is due to North Korea supplying weapons and munitions to Russia as the vehicles had tarps covering the shipping crates, containers and equipment that was being transported. Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin met in September amid speculation about their nations' increasing alliance. By: MEGA The think tank asserts there are other factors that indicate that the Tumangang Rail Facility is supplying arms to Russia rather than merely returning traffic to pre-pandemic levels. "It is notable that the external characteristics of the crates/containers and equipment are different from those observed during the past five years at the facility," Beyond Parallel states, noting that over the past five years satellite imagery showed approximately 20 railcars at the facility at most. A previous report from Beyond Parallel included confirmation from the White House that North Korea was supplying arms to Russia's Wagner Group. The think tank also stated images show ongoing construction on what appears to be a new warehouse facility at Tumangang. Kim Jong Un gets off a train to meet with Russian officials in September. By: MEGA "Complementing these developments has been the construction of a security wall with numerous guard positions encompassing the warehouse facility and southern section of the railyard during the past two years. This activity is likely both part of North Korea’s efforts to strictly control population movements and preparations to handle sensitive goods at the border as the country seeks to strengthen its ties with Russia," Beyond Parallel reported. Russia is suspected of recent long-range nuclear missile testing. And according to recent reports, United Kingdom officials believe Russia is also reportedly planning to sabotage civilian cargo ships carrying Ukrainian grain in the Black Sea using sea mines, instead of directly striking merchant vessels with missiles.
