G20 finance meeting wraps up without statement NHK

Finance officials from the G20 nations wrapped up a meeting in Brazil on Thursday without issuing a joint statement due to divisions over Ukraine and other geopolitical conflicts.

The meeting brought together finance ministers and central bank governors from the G20.

Discussions at the two-day meeting in Sao Paulo covered the global economic outlook, as well as poverty and inequality.

The delegates said the impact of interest rate hikes on the global economy remains uncertain. But they shared the view that the possibility of a soft landing is growing.

Bank of Japan Governor Ueda Kazuo met reporters after the meeting amid growing speculation the bank is preparing to shift its massive monetary easing policy.

However, he said the stable achievement of the central bank's 2 percent inflation target is not yet confirmed.

Ueda said," I will continue to focus on whether a positive wage-inflation cycle will kick off and strengthen."

The BOJ will hold a meeting later this month and release a statement after the gathering to explain the bank's latest views on monetary policy.
