US President Donald Trump has indicated that he has opted to work with Venezuela's interim president to avoid chaos, citing the situation in Iraq that followed the ouster of Saddam Hussein.
Trump was asked by a reporter on Friday why he supports Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez over opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who the reporter said has the support of the Venezuelan people. Rodriguez was vice president under the administration of President Nicolas Maduro, who was captured and sent to the United States in a US military operation.
Trump replied, "If you ever remember a place called Iraq, where everybody was fired, every single person, the police, the generals, everybody was fired, and they ended up being ISIS."
He referred to the rise of the Islamic State militant group in the wake of the collapse of the Hussein administration during the Iraq War.
Trump at the same time praised Machado, whom he met on Thursday. He said he had never met her before and he was very impressed. He called her "a very fine woman."
As to the gifting of her Nobel Peace Prize medal to him, Trump said he accepted because "she offered it to me."
He quoted her as telling him, "You've ended eight wars and nobody deserves this prize more -- in history -- than you do." Trump added that he and Machado will be talking again.
