Health authorities in the Gaza Strip say the number of people killed there in the conflict between Israel and Hamas since it began in October has surpassed 20,000.
                
They released the latest death toll of 20,057 on Friday.
                
Aljazeera, the Qatar-based satellite TV network, said Khan Younis in southern Gaza came under intense Israeli airstrikes on Thursday. It also said Israeli airstrikes in the north hit a building in Jabalia, where a top Gaza health official was taking shelter. The attack reportedly seriously wounded him and killed his daughter.
                
The World Food Programme said on Thursday that 2.08 million people, or 93 percent of the population in Gaza, had suffered crisis levels of food shortages from November 24 to December 7.
                
The WFP also said about 380,000 people, or about 17 percent of the population, are facing catastrophic hunger, and is at Phase 5, the worst level in the UN&#039;s classification for food insecurity.
                
The UN food security agency says without the safe and sustained provision of assistance no one in Gaza is safe from starvation.
