Belarusian defense ministry officials say they have deployed nuclear-capable Iskander short-range ballistic missiles they purchased from Russia. The ministry said on Wednesday that after Belarusian servicemen received training in Russia, practical training was carried out on military grounds in Belarus. The ministry said the missile system has a range of up to 500 kilometers and can strike any target. The Russian-developed missiles can carry nuclear warheads. Belarus, an ally of Russia, is located north of Ukraine, sharing a long border. In talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko last June, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated the missile systems would be supplied to Belarus at an early date. The latest development comes after the two countries carried out joint air force drills from January 16 through Wednesday. Observers say that with the deployment of the Iskander, Russia and Belarus are sounding a warning to Western nations, which are stepping up their military support for Ukraine.
