China's navy conducts combat training near Taiwan after ending 3-day exercises NHK

China's state-run television says the country's navy carried out combat training in waters around Taiwan on Tuesday.

China Central Television reported that the air-defense and anti-missile training involved several warships.

Taiwan's defense ministry said it confirmed the activities of 26 Chinese military aircraft and nine warships around Taiwan during a five-hour period on Tuesday morning.

This came a day after Beijing announced the end of three-day patrols and military exercises around Taiwan through Monday.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson earlier indicated that the operations were in response to the meeting between Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week.

China is apparently trying to rattle Taiwan by continuing to put military pressure in the lead-up to Taiwan's presidential election in January next year.
