Trump says he may soon raise 25% tariff on imported autos NHK

A: Hey buddy! Did you catch the latest news?
B: Nah, what's up?

A: Well, Trump's talking about raising tariffs on imported cars even more!
B: Really now? What's that all about?

A: He already slapped a 25% tax on foreign cars in April. But he's saying he might bump it up soon to convince carmakers to build factories here in the US.
B: Wow, that's tough! And Japan's government is trying to talk with Washington about this, hoping to strike a deal next week at the G7 summit.

A: That's right! Japan's top tariff negotiator is heading to Washington tomorrow for their sixth round of talks.
B: Man, that sounds intense. I hope they can work something out to keep things fair.

US President Donald Trump has suggested that he may soon raise tariffs on foreign automobiles to persuade carmakers to build vehicles in the United States.

The president hit all imported automobiles with an additional 25 percent tariff in April.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Trump said: "To further defend our auto workers, I imposed this 25 percent tariff on all foreign automobiles, and investment in American manufacturing and auto manufacturing, all manufacturing is surging. And I might go up with that tariff in the not too distant future. The higher you go, the more likely it is to build a plant here."

The Japanese government has been negotiating with Washington over the tariff measures.
It hopes to reach an agreement at a bilateral summit scheduled to be held on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada next week.

Japan's top tariff negotiator, Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei, is heading to Washington on Friday for his sixth round of talks.
