1. Elementary school students in Takayama City, central Japan, learned to make traditional Hanamochi ornaments, resembling flowers made from rice cakes and branches, as part of a cultural practice common in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. 2. The rice cakes used for the ornaments were grown and harvested by the students under the guidance of local farmers, making it a hands-on learning experience. 3. The students will take some of their crafted Hanamochi home and give the rest to the farmers who taught them rice cultivation, as well as donate them to nearby welfare facilities.
