South Korea, US hold joint air drills involving US B-1B bomber NHK

South Korea and the United States conducted joint air drills, involving at least one US B-1B bomber, over the Korean Peninsula on Thursday.

South Korea's defense ministry said South Korean and US fighter jets also took part in the first joint air drills between the two countries since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House on January 20.

The ministry said: "The training was conducted to display the US extended deterrence capabilities against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and bolster interoperability of South Korea-US combined forces."

According to South Korean media, B-1B bombers carrying large quantities of weapons can reach the Korean Peninsula in less than two hours after leaving their base in Guam.

The South Korean defense ministry added that under close coordination, the allies will seek to strengthen their cooperation by continuously expanding combined drills to deter and counter North Korean threats.
