2,340 members attend Chinese Communist Party's National Congress NHK

China's Communist Party says 2,340 members have gathered in Beijing to attend its National Congress, which opened on Sunday.

Former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli was among the attendees on the opening day.

He drew attention when a document purportedly made by Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai accusing him of sexual assault was published on social media last year.

Other former leaders also took part, including former President Hu Jintao, who sat next to President Xi Jinping, and former Premier Wen Jiabao.

105-year-old Song Ping, who reportedly stresses the importance of reforms and open-market policies, also took part.

However, 96-year-old former President Jiang Zemin and former Premier Zhu Rongji were not seen in the venue.

The party says 39 members were absent due to sickness.
