Sharply higher food prices push up Japan's CPI NHK

A: Hey, got a moment?

B: Sure! What's up?

A: Did you hear about the news? Prices are going crazy!

B: No way! What's happening exactly?

A: It looks like food prices went wild. Rice doubled in cost, and things like coffee beans, chocolate, even onigiri rice balls... all skyrocketed!

B: Whoa, that's a big jump! Anything we can do about it?

A: Well, the government's trying to help with gasoline subsidies. But overall, prices of non-perishable food are up more than 8% and even the Consumer Price Index without fresh food is over 3%.

B: That's not great... I hope it gets better soon!

A: Yeah, me too. The ministry did mention that only branded rice prices were surveyed. There are some cheaper grains coming from government stockpiles, though.

B: That's something at least. Let's hope things calm down!

Prices of several other food items rose by double digits. Coffee beans and chocolate jumped about 40 percent, onigiri rice balls, 19 percent.
