The Israeli military says it has completed a massive operation in the West Bank.

The military said on Wednesday morning that it withdrew its troops, ending the operation, which it says was aimed at eradicating fighters of Palestinian militant groups.

The operation in Jenin targeted a local refugee camp that has an area of about one square kilometer. Israel deployed more than 1,000 troops.

Thirteen Palestinians were killed during the Israeli raid in Jenin and elsewhere, and over 100 others were wounded. The Israeli military announced the death of one soldier.

Early on Wednesday, militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets toward Israel, and the Israeli military carried out air strikes on military facilities in Gaza in response.

Israel stressed achievements of the operation in Jenin, such as seizure of weapons.

But the situation there remains tense, as Palestinians have been increasingly frustrated over the Israeli occupation and continued expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory which violate international law.
