Zelenskyy visits US military base in Germany NHK

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited a US military base in Germany amid a stalemate in the US Congress over additional aid to his country.

Zelenskyy said in a social media post on Thursday he arrived at the US Army Command there.

He stressed Ukraine critically needs US military aid to achieve victory and expressed hope the US Congress will keep providing help.

The US Congress has not approved an emergency spending bill that includes aid to Ukraine as some Republicans are reluctant to continue support for Kyiv.

Before leaving for Germany, Zelenskyy met leaders of the five Nordic nations in Norway to discuss military assistance.

He had also called on EU leaders to allow Ukraine into their bloc and they have agreed to open talks on the bid.

The president said it was a truly remarkable result for Ukraine and all of Europe. He added the time will come when Ukrainians will be able to celebrate their country's accession to the EU.

Back home, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Thursday Russia launched 50 aerial and 14 drone attacks in southern Ukraine and other areas.

Ukraine also said it shot down one of three Kinzhal missiles near Kyiv. Russia claims they are hypersonic.

The Air Force said the other two flew to the western region of Khmelnytskyi. It is unknown whether there were any casualties.
