If the agreement is realized, it would be the first lunar landing by Japanese astronauts.

Japan will also provide technological support with a manned lunar rover that is being developed jointly by the country's space agency JAXA, carmaker Toyota, and others.

The Artemis program would mark the first return of astronauts to the lunar surface in about 50 years since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
