The Japanese government plans to study ways to provide disaster preparedness education drawing on lessons learned from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.



Tuesday marks 14 years since the massive quake struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. Many people lost their lives in the tsunami that followed.



The government aims to strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation measures based on this experience, as it seeks to set up a disaster management agency.



An expert panel for the preparation of the agency is expected to consider disaster prevention education that could help people evacuate promptly when they are at risk of disasters such as quakes, heavy rain, tsunami and floods.



The planned agenda includes how to make regional evacuation drills effective, how to improve school lessons and materials and how to use hazard maps and other resources to provide information.



The panel also plans to discuss what role the disaster management agency should play.



The minister in charge of preparations for establishing the agency, Akazawa Ryosei, said preparedness education is important for people to take appropriate action to protect their lives.



He added this is one of the key areas that the new agency should work on.
