Ukraine's FM works to strengthen ties with ASEAN member states NHK

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says he has called for support from ASEAN and forged closer ties with its member states.

Kuleba has been attending meetings as an observer at the ASEAN summit in Cambodia since Tuesday.

Kuleba told reporters in Phnom Penh on Saturday that he was able to deepen relationships with ASEAN members in the areas of politics and food security.

Ukraine's diplomatic sources say Kuleba met leaders and foreign ministers of eight ASEAN states. But he will not attend Sunday's East Asia Summit, in which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part.

Member states are not all on the same page regarding the Ukraine issue. Some have deeper military and economic ties to Russia than others.

Kuleba is aiming to capitalize on the visit to win greater support for his country from ASEAN states.
