US President Donald Trump has indicated that Elon Musk will likely leave his administration in a few months. Musk heads the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.
Trump told a reporter on Thursday that Musk is great but has a number of companies to run. He said, "There'll be a point at which time Elon's going to have to leave." Trump also indicated that DOGE is set to continue after Musk leaves.
US media outlets report that Musk's term as a special government employee allows him to work for up to 130 days a year. That means his term will expire in late May at the earliest.
On Wednesday, the US political website Politico reported that Trump had told his inner circle that Musk would be stepping back in the coming weeks from his current role as a government partner.
Some of Trump's aides have reportedly become frustrated with Musk's influence over government spending and slashing the federal workforce.
