Crowd crush at New Year's event in Uganda kills at least 9 NHK

A crowd crush has occurred during a New Year's celebration in the East African nation of Uganda. Local police say at least nine people, including children, died.

The incident occurred early on Sunday at a shopping mall in the capital Kampala. A large crowd was there for a concert to usher in the New Year.

A fireworks display started near the mall at midnight and the audience went out to watch it. When the concert emcee called on them to go back to the concert venue, many fell on top of one another.

Large-scale New Year's events were being held in Uganda for the first time in three years, after the country eased COVID restrictions.

Police are questioning event organizers and other people to find out how the crush occurred.
