In the World Cup in Qatar, South Korea beat European heavyweights Portugal 2-1 to advance to the knockout stage for the third time overall and the first since 2010. South Korea needed a win to have any chance of advancing to the round of 16. Ricardo Horta fired Portugal ahead after just five minutes. But just before the half-hour mark, South Korea equalized when Kim Young-gwon pounced on Portugal's failure to deal with a corner. Desperate for another goal, Song Heung-min came through in stoppage time. He charged forward on a break before feeding Hwang Hee-chan who scored the dramatic winner. In Group H, Portugal finished the group stage first with 6 points. Uruguay beat Ghana 2-nil to pull even with South Korea on four points but the South Koreans advanced on goal difference.
