Israelis, Palestinians await 3rd swap NHK

People in Israel and the Palestinian territory are waiting anxiously to see if their loved ones have made the list in the third hostage-for-prisoner swap expected to happen on Sunday.

Hamas released 13 Israelis and 4 Thai nationals in the second batch on Saturday. The group has promised to hand over 50 captives to Israel during a four-day pause in fighting. 13 Israelis were the first to be released on Friday.

People flooded the streets of the West Bank to celebrate the freeing of Palestinians from Israeli custody. Local media report that Israel let 39 more Palestinians out of its prisons, raising the total to 78. The deal's mediator, Qatar, says 48 are children and 30 are women.

Reports say a woman who is one of the freed Palestinians suffered disfiguring burns when her car exploded near a West Bank checkpoint in 2015. Israel has held her since then on suspicion of attempted murder.

Amnesty International has accused Israel of arbitrarily detaining thousands of Palestinians like her without trial.

She said, "Girls at the prison were subjected to terrible acts that I could hardly bear to see." She added that such acts considerably became more terrible after the start of the current conflict.

The hostage exchange is taking place in phases. But the second batch was announced seven hours later than expected. Hamas blames Israel for the delay.

Hamas spokesperson said that Israel is not abiding by the agreement as it hasn't allowed the number of aid trucks agreed upon.

Under the agreement, aid supplies and fuel are being delivered to Gaza during the pause.

In the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a gas station reopened following the arrival of fuel. But a rush of buyers caused major chaos.

A man said, "It's hard to get food, water, fuel... and even to use the toilet."

Aid supplies have also reached northern Gaza. But Hamas said less than half the supplies agreed upon have been delivered there.

Sunday marks the third day of the pause. It remains to be seen whether the deal will be fully implemented.
