Experts tasked with assessing Tokyo's coronavirus situation have lowered the alert level for medical service provisions in the capital, citing a continued decline in the number of hospitalized patients of COVID-19. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Thursday released findings from analyses on the situations regarding infections and medical service provisions in Tokyo. The report shows the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients dropped by 522 from a week ago to 1,424 as of Wednesday. Week-on-week figures continued to decline for five weeks in a row. The experts noted that medical institutions can now deal with both coronavirus patients and those suffering from other diseases, even though some strains remain on other services including emergency care. They lowered the alert level for medical service provisions by one notch to the second lowest. The last time the alert stayed at that level was in late November. The seven-day average number of new cases as of Wednesday was 1,648. The figure fell below the 2,000-mark for the first time since June last year. But the experts decided to keep the alert level for the infection situation unchanged at the second lowest. They are calling on people to continue to be vigilant about the virus.
