A senior White House official has indicated that US President Joe Biden intends to reassess his country's relationship with Saudi Arabia following a recent decision by the world's major oil exporters to sharply cut production. National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said on Tuesday that Biden believes the United States should review its relationship with Saudi Arabia to serve national security interests. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners, known as OPEC Plus, agreed earlier this month to a production cut of 2 million barrels a day, starting in November. Saudi Arabia is a leading member of the organization. Cuts in oil production will mean price hikes, leading to the possibility of increased Russian revenues from its oil exports. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also criticized the decision on Tuesday. She said, "They certainly are aligning themselves with Russia." In July, Biden visited Saudi Arabia to call on the Arab nation to increase crude oil production despite opposition within his country. In response to the latest OPEC Plus decision, some Democratic Party members are calling for a review of US weapons sales to Saudi Arabia.
