Russia launches large-scale missile attack against Ukraine NHK

Russian forces launched a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine on Saturday.

The Ukrainian Air Force says among 40 of the launched missiles were six Kinzhal missiles which Russia says are hypersonic.

Ukraine says its forces shot down eight of the projectiles, and used electromagnetic jamming to divert more than 20 others from their targets.

Local media say explosions were heard in the Kyiv region, the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region and the central Kirovohrad region, but details remain unknown.

In the Kherson region, authorities say two people were killed after more than 400 artillery rounds were fired in the 24 hours up to Saturday morning.

They condemned Russian forces for targeting populated areas with residential homes and schools.

Meanwhile, a report by the US Defense Department's Inspector General says one billion dollars' worth of military equipment to Ukraine, including attack drones and night vision goggles, has not been properly tracked.

Attention is on whether the report will have an impact on the United States' military aid to Ukraine, which may determine the outcome of the war, as some Republican Congress members are becoming wary of it.
