Japan's Emperor Naruhito has greeted the general public on his birthday at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The Emperor turned 63 on Thursday. This is the first time he has delivered a public birthday greeting since he ascended the throne in 2019. To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, only about 4,800 people, chosen by lottery, were allowed into the palace grounds. In the morning, the Emperor, Empress Masako and their daughter, Princess Aiko, appeared on the palace balcony three times and waved at well-wishers. They were joined by Crown Prince and Princess Akishino and their daughter, Princess Kako. Emperor Naruhito expressed his gratitude to the people for celebrating his birthday in the first public event since his enthronement. He also expressed his sincere sympathies to people affected by heavy snow in winter. The Emperor said he feels spring gradually approaching, and hopes that everyone can enjoy peaceful days in the coming warm season.
