Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi visited a plant run by a chip-making equipment manufacturer in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Saturday.
Ishiba expressed his intention to enhance cooperation with India on economic security, including the reinforcement of supply chains for semiconductors.
The two traveled together aboard a Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai, and Ishiba highlighted its safety and punctuality.
The leaders agreed on Friday to step up cooperation for the introduction of Shinkansen trains for a high-speed railway line now under construction in India.
Ishiba told reporters that the two-day visit by Modi was very fruitful. He said they discussed the significance of bilateral collaboration in regions including Asia, the Pacific and Africa.
Japan's government attaches importance to relations with India, which has the world's largest population and is expanding its presence in the international community.
Ishiba apparently hopes to boost ties with India through active summit-level diplomacy. He was invited by Modi to visit India later this year to coincide with a summit of the Quad nations, which also includes the United States and Australia.
