Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is set to vow that Japan will bear greater responsibility in maintaining global order during his address to the US Congress on Thursday. Kishida will address a joint session of the legislature in English. It will be the first congressional address by a Japanese prime minister in nine years. He will also point out that global order, based on freedom and democracy, has been threatened by moves of Russia and China. Bearing in mind that political divisions are deepening in the US ahead of the presidential election in November, Kishida is expected to say that bipartisan cooperation is essential for Japan and US to work together closely. On Wednesday, Kishida held talks with US President Joe Biden. The two leaders acknowledged deepening cooperation between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the US forces and strengthening collaboration in a wide range of areas such as economic security and space. Kishida said in a news conference after the summit, "With our partnership, we will defend the future of Japan and the United States, the Indo-Pacific, and the world and make that future all the more prosperous."
