Three NHK programs win ABU prizes NHK

NHK television programs have won three of the top awards at this year's meeting of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, a federation of broadcasters from 65 countries and regions.

The theme of the 2024 ABU general assembly, which opened in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday, is "The Nexus of AI, Broadcasting, and Society."

Mehmet Zahid Sobaci, director-general of this year's host organization the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, told the gathering that AI is taking the media into a new age.

The ABU prizes recognize excellence in TV, radio and digital content.

The TV ABU Perspective Award went to NHK's "FRONTIERS: How Smart is AI?," a documentary that explored progress in AI and the meaning of intelligence.

Another NHK program, "At Home in Kobe: Soccer Star Andres Iniesta," won the award in the sports division of the TV category. The documentary focused on Iniesta's emotional bond with the city where he spent five years.

In the entertainment division of the TV category, the award went to NHK's "MIRADOR: Soundscape through Japan," which looked at natural and other sounds recorded in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
