EC President von der Leyen assures support for Ukraine NHK

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reassured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that his country has the EU's unwavering support.

Von der Leyen visited Kyiv on Saturday. She talked about proposals made to EU members on financial support for Ukraine up to 2027 and new sanctions against Russia.

She stressed the EU's support for just and long-lasting peace for Ukraine.

Among EU members, Slovakia's new prime minister announced in October that his country plans to end military aid to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Western media reported that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke about international fatigue over the conflict in Ukraine.

She reportedly talked to a Russian who phoned her posing as a senior member of an African organization.

Meloni is said to have told the caller that the moment is near when everybody will understand the need for "a way out."

Von der Leyen's visit was aimed at reassuring Kyiv that the EU's position is to support Ukraine as much as possible.
