S.Korea to impose sanctions on N.Korea's defense minister, 9 others, 2 entities NHK

South Korea has imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea's Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam, nine other individuals and two entities in relation to the North's nuclear and missile program, and weapons trade.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the 10 individuals in question also include the chief of staff of the military and other senior officers, as well as senior members of the ruling Korean Workers' Party.

The Ministry said that the sanctions against Defense Minister Kang and the chief of the military are in response to their involvement in North Korea's nuclear and missile developments.

The sanctions against some other individuals and the two entities relate to North Korea's arms trade with Russia and some other countries.

This is the 12th round of sanctions that South Korea has imposed on North Korea since President Yoon Suk-yeol came to office in May 2022.

The Yonhap News Agency says the latest sanctions are meant to suppress North Korea from engaging in weapons trade with Russia.
