China's Defense Ministry says Defense Minister Li Shangfu is visiting Russia and its ally Belarus from Monday. The ministry says Li is on a six-day trip to the two countries at the invitation of his Russian and Belarusian counterparts, Sergei Shoigu and Viktor Khrenin. During his first stop in Russia, Li will deliver a speech at a forum and meet with Russian officials. In Belarus, he will meet with President Alexander Lukashenko. Li last visited Russia in April and met with President Vladimir Putin and Shoigu. China and Russia are boosting military ties through a joint patrol program and military drills. Observers say Li's visit to Russia and Belarus is intended to reaffirm Beijing's solidarity with them while it remains at odds with Washington.
