US destroyer's transit through Taiwan Strait draws Chinese reaction NHK

A US Navy destroyer sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, drawing a response from China.

The US Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement on Thursday that guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon carried out a routine transit through the strait.

It said the transit "demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific."

The Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command, which covers the East China Sea, said in a statement on Friday that the command is monitoring and keeping track of all moves of the US fleet.

US defense officials are increasingly alarmed by Chinese activities near Taiwan, including a drill in late December that involved a large number of military aircraft.

Chinese and US military planes also came within about six meters of each other over the South China Sea last month, raising concerns over a possible accident.

Observers say the US Navy's latest move through the Taiwan Strait is aimed at keeping China in check.
