The summit comes after the conference opened in Sharm el-Sheikh, eastern Egypt, on Sunday.

Guterres opened the meeting with a speech. He said, "Global temperatures keep rising," and "We are getting dangerously close to the point of no return." He added, "Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish."

More than 100 nations and regions are expected to take part in the two-day World Leaders Summit.

Those taking to the podium on day one include French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to make a video appearance on day two.

The conference is expected to cover ways to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The participants also plan to discuss financial support for loss and damage caused by the negative impacts of climate change.
