Voters in Germany are casting their ballots in general elections. Attention is focused on how much support the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party will garner. Polls opened at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The election follows the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's ruling coalition last November. The latest opinion poll by German public broadcaster ZDF shows the largest opposition, the center-right alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union, is in the lead with 28 percent support. The Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, which is deemed far right, is in second place with a support rate of 21 percent. The AfD is supported by US entrepreneur Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance. Scholz's center-left Social Democratic Party has a support rate of 16 percent. None of the parties are expected to secure an outright majority in the parliamentary elections. It is likely that the largest opposition will gain the most seats and lead negotiations to launch a coalition government. The alliance's candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz, is viewed as a frontrunner for the German chancellorship. Polls will close at 6 p.m. on Sunday and the ballots will be counted immediately.
