Weather officials are calling on people in central and eastern Japan to be on the alert for landslides, as heavy rainfall continues to pound the regions.
                
The Meteorological Agency says warm humid air is flowing toward a low-pressure system and rain front, destabilizing atmospheric conditions mainly on eastern Japan&#039;s Pacific coast.
                
Downpours are pummeling the Izu Islands and Shizuoka Prefecture.
                
The city of Atami in Shizuoka saw record rainfall of 255.5 millimeters for the 12-hour period through 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday. Izu City, also in Shizuoka, got more than 300 millimeters for the 12 hours until 6 p.m.
                
Torrential rains with thunder are likely to continue in Shizuoka and the Kanto-Koshin region.
                
The rain has heightened the risk of landslides in the prefectures of Shizuoka and Kanagawa and the Izu Islands, as well as in Okinawa Prefecture.
                
The agency is also warning of swollen rivers and flooding in low-lying areas, lightning, strong winds, including tornadoes, and hail.
                
East Japan Railway Company, or JR East, on Tuesday suspended train services on the Ito Line in Shizuoka Prefecture, as well as part of the Uchibo Line and the Kururi Line in Chiba Prefecture.
                
Officials are calling on travelers to check the JR website to keep updated with the latest information.
