Ukraine deputy PM: Reconstruction should start immediately NHK

Ukraine's deputy prime minister has stressed that reconstruction work should not wait until Russia's invasion of his country comes to an end.

Oleksandr Kubrakov spoke to NHK ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference that will be held for two days from Wednesday in London.

Kubrakov, who doubles as infrastructure minister, said the Ukrainian government will explain its progress in reconstruction as well as its priorities, needs and challenges.

He also said it's critical not to wait to the end of the conflict and to start works now, arguing that Ukrainians will be stronger on the battlefield when their economy is stronger.

As for the fallout of the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in the southern region of Kherson, Kubrakov warned that about one million people could face water shortages.

He said authorities are constructing water pipelines, but they are unable to get a full understanding of the challenges faced by the farmland affected by the dam's destruction.

He urged Japanese companies to help restructure and reform Ukraine's energy sector, saying they have the most advanced technology and highest efficiency in the sector.
