Clashes continue between Sudan's armed forces and a paramilitary group. More than 140 civilians have died in the violence. The fighting erupted on Saturday between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. The RSF grew discontent with negotiations that have been underway since the military seized power in an October 2021 coup. The talks are aimed at steering the country toward civilian rule. Explosions could be heard in the capital, Khartoum, on Tuesday. A local doctors' group says 144 civilians have been killed, and about 1,400 people injured, including soldiers. It says many medical institutions have been rendered unusable due to attacks and power outages. The international community has expressed concerns about a possible escalation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that he had spoken on the phone with the commanders of both sides. He said he had urged them to accept a 24-hour ceasefire. Blinken was speaking to reporters after the Group of Seven foreign ministerial talks in Japan. The UN Security Council held an emergency closed-door meeting on Monday to discuss the situation in Sudan. In a news conference, the three African non-permanent members of the Council called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
