Govt. survey: More Japanese companies hiking wages this year NHK

A survey by Japan's labor ministry has revealed that more companies are hiking wages this year.

The results showed 89.1 percent of companies have already raised compensation or plan to do so, through regular increments or increases in base pay. The figure was up 3.4 percentage points from last year, and marked the second consecutive yearly rise.

The construction sector led the way, followed by manufacturing. But the transportation and postal industries had the smallest number of companies raising pay, followed by the accommodation and restaurant sectors.

The survey also showed that the average monthly salary per worker rose by 9,437 yen, or about 63 dollars. The 3.2 percent increase from last year was the biggest since the current survey began in 1999.

Ministry officials say the higher wages suggest companies considered price trends, as well as the importance of compensation to secure sufficient personnel.
