Indonesia and Timor-Leste offer condolences NHK

Leaders from Indonesia and Timor-Leste also offered condolences. The Pope visited this region last year.



Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his sorrow. He remembered Pope Francis as a global figure who sincerely championed the values of peace and humanity.



Prabowo said, "His message of simplicity, pluralism, solidarity with the poor, and compassion for others, will always serve as an example for all of us."



Pope Francis visited Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, last September.



Prabowo said the visit left a lasting impression not only among the Catholic community but also in the hearts of all Indonesians.



Jose Ramos-Horta, President of Catholic-majority Timor-Leste, formerly known as East Timor, expressed his condolences on behalf of the nation. The country declared one week of national mourning, with flags at half-mast from Tuesday.



Ramos-Horta said Francis was from the beginning a Pope who walked closely with the poor, the excluded, the marginalized, migrants and victims of war and indifference.



His visit was the first papal visit to Timor-Leste in over 30 years.
