A: Hey there! Guess what's been happening lately? B: What now? I've been pretty busy. What's up? A: India just took over China as the top manufacturer of iPhones for the US market, according to a report by CNBC! B: No way! That's big news. What changed? A: Well, it seems Apple moved their production to India as a response to the tariffs on Chinese imports from Trump. B: Wow, that must have been a tough decision for them. But how did it turn out? A: Turned out pretty well! In April, India shipped around 3 million iPhones to the US, which is up by 76% compared to last year. On the other hand, China saw a drop of 76%. B: That's quite a difference! So, what happened in March? A: In March, India sent around 4.4 million iPhones and China only managed to send 4.3 million. B: Incredible! And this is going to continue for the next quarter too, right? A: Yup! Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said that most of the iPhones sold in the US during the April-to-June quarter will be coming from India. B: Interesting... I wonder if this move will help them avoid those tariffs Trump imposed on goods from China. A: Well, it was certainly meant to. But just yesterday, Trump tweeted that iPhones not made in the US would face at least a 25% tariff. B: Oh dear! That's not great news for Apple then... A: Guess we'll have to wait and see how things unfold! ---------------- A US media report says India overtook China as the top manufacturer of iPhones for the US market in the last two months. That reflects the shift in Apple's production to the south Asian nation in response to US tariffs on Chinese imports. CNBC says data from Singapore-based research firm Canalys show that India shipped roughly 3 million iPhones to the US in April. That is up 76 percent from a year earlier. Shipments from China over the same period tumbled 76 percent to 900,000 units. The report says India sent 4.4 million in March compared to China's 4.3 million. Apple CEO Tim Cook said on May 1 that most iPhones for sale in the US in the April-to-June quarter would come from India. The move was intended to alleviate the impact of tariffs on goods from China imposed by President Donald Trump. However, Trump warned in a social media post on Friday that iPhones not made in the US would be hit with a tariff of at least 25 percent.
